HISTORY TIMELINE
1888: Charles Tobin “C.T.” McCarty arrives in St. Lucie
County from Iowa, builds a small home on the Indian
River and begins raising pineapple and citrus. He was also
an attorney. He dies in 1907.
1937-41: C.T. McCarty’s grandson, cattleman and citrus
grower Dan McCarty, is elected state representative. Family
extends holdings, running cattle and growing citrus out
west off Range Line Road.
1952: Dan McCarty is elected governor of Florida.
1953: Dan McCarty dies of a heart attack.
1957: John McCarty, his brother, becomes a judge.
1962 and 1966: John McCarty elected state senator
2004: McCarty family sells off last piece of the ranch.
2012: City of Port St. Lucie buys the land
PROJECT DRAFT TIMELINE
2015 — Prepare aquifer storage and recovery well report.
2020 — Pilot test with multiple ASR wells and start sampling
C-23 water to see what treatment process is needed.
2025 — Investigate the most economical and efficient way
to pump water from canal to plant.
2030 — Start construction of well fields.
2035 — Start construction of treatment plant.
2040 — Treatment plant goes into service.
Kayakers paddled their way across the preserve’s south lake. It will also
double as a storage reservoir for rain collected during the rainy season.
