RECREATION
Goats are cute and fun to watch, and a crowd of children awaits a chance
to visit during the grand opening of the McCarty Ranch Preserve.
canal sending millions of gallons to the North Fork of the St.
Lucie River, including phosphorus and nitrogen, the water
will be removed from the canal and stored in the lakes and in
deep wells that may be 1,000 feet or 3,000 feet deep. During
the dry season it will be withdrawn and sent to a treatment
plant. Because the North Fork dumps into the Indian River
Lagoon where lowered salinity and algae blooms are everpresent
problems, the McCarty Ranch water storage will help
restore the rivers and keep them clean.
Although there is a draft timeline for the project, planning
is ongoing, says Donna Rhoden, public affairs and
safety manager for the city’s Utility Systems Department. >> Police Explorer Scouts helped out all day and had a great time.
