coyote (Canis latrins) wades through a thicket of weeds on Adams Ranch
west of Fort Pierce. Though indigenous to the western United States, the
coyote is not native to Florida. Coyotes were introduced in Florida for pursuit
by hunting dogs as early as the 1920s, though their migration to Florida was
inevitable because of their ability to adapt to a range of habitats and food sources,
according to the University of Florida Institute of Food & Agricultural Sciences.
Coyotes became more commonplace along the Treasure Coast in the early 1980s.
They scavenge refuse and usually kill smaller animals such as birds or rodents for food. A
