Indian River Magazine Inc. is a locally
owned company based at 308 Ave. A
in Fort Pierce, Fla. Indian River magazine
publishes five times a year: early
October, late November, mid-January,
early March and early May. All material
contained herein is copyrighted by
Indian River Magazine Inc.
At least in appearance, this issue of Indian River is far different from any of the
previous 10 we’ve published. In keeping with our green editorial theme for this
issue, we decided as a test to publish the entire magazine from 100 percent recycled
paper. Of course, we want to hear from you whether you’d like us to continue
using the usual non-recycled paper and cover stock or to consider switching to 100
percent recycled paper.
Let us explain the difference you are seeing with this issue. First the cover. Our
normal cover uses a thick 100-pound non-recycled paper stock with a UV coating, a
process using a petroleum product that gives the magazine cover its shiny appearance.
We opt for a thicker cover than most magazines to make them hold up over the years.
That’s because many of our readers tell us they collect our magazines and use them as a
resource because of our continuing focus on Treasure Coast history. This issue, however,
uses a 74-pound cover, which is the thickest available in 100 percent recycled paper
from our printer. While we had the option of UV coating this issue, we decided not to
as a conservation measure in keeping with our green theme.
Now about our pages inside the magazine. Our text paper is usually a 60-pound
gloss, but in this issue we are using a 60-pound matte paper that is 100 percent recycled.
The biggest difference you will notice with both the cover and the text paper is that it
won’t seem as bright or glossy as it normally does. That’s because 100 percent recycled
glossy paper isn’t yet available to us.
Finally, for those of you who receive your magazine in the mail, you will notice that
this issue merely has a mailing label and doesn’t come in its usual plastic wrapping
known as a polybag. Once again, this is meant as a conservation measure in keeping
with our green theme.
And speaking of conservation, we are fortunate to work with an environmentally
conscious printer, the Ovid Bell Press, which stocks 100 percent recycled paper, uses
soy-based inks, recycles all scrap paper and has a reclamation system that decreases
water usage.
Like our printer, we will continue to work to conserve as much of our natural
resources as possible while delivering our readers a magazine they enjoy. We won’t
make any changes without the support of our readers, so please let us know what you
think by visiting our Web site at indianrivermag.com, where we have a special section
that will let you comment on this issue. You can also e-mail us at enns@indianrivermag.
com or call us at 772.466.3346. We look forward to hearing from you.
