sang at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York
City last year. And during spring break in
April, OPUS will travel to San Francisco for
a national competition
The choir gave more than 30 performances
last season and this year’s calendar promises
to be just as crowded. Following a successful
series of holiday concerts, the students
will perform in “The Lion King,’’ a Martin
County High School drama department’s
presentation that opens Jan. 30.
It takes much more than just a desire to
sing to become a member of this acclaimed
chorus. At the end of the school year, applicants
must go through a series of auditions
to determine whether they will join
the others on the risers when the next year’s
performance schedule begins.
“Each student must sing a solo, take a
written and sight-singing test and demonstrate
an ability for dance movement,”
Corbin said. Beyond that, students “must
have teacher recommendations and maintain
a good academic record.”
As director of OPUS for more than a
quarter-century, Corbin said he isn’t even
thinking about retirement, “not as long as it’s
fun.” One of the many OPUS graduates who
has gone on to a career in music is Corbin’s
daughter Candice, who is a part-time
