Who pays for the remodeling?
We put the money in, depending on the size of the project. We
ask the homeowners that if want more they can definitely put
more money into it, and most people take advantage of that to
get a better new room.
You’ve probably become the chief spokesperson for using
eco-friendly building materials. How did you get started in
the green movement?
When I was growing up my parents were both huge into nutrition
and they were very careful about what they consumed. When
we washed the car, we used biodegradable soap. That sort of led
me to understand to care for things on Earth and to ask more
questions. Now I’m very conscious about what I use and what the
show uses, who makes the products and how they’re shipped.
What are some eco-friendly things that can be done for
older homes?
One of the biggest things you can do and it may not sound
sexy, but it’s weather stripping and sealing up your home and
having proper ventilation. You always have that energy bill
every month. With proper sealing, you’ll not only have an improved
home you’ll also be able to save money every month.
What are some of the eco-friendly steps that can be taken
during new construction?
Find out where the materials are coming from and whether
they are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which
makes sure materials aren’t clear cut. People like to use a lot
of granite today in their transformations. But there are a lot of
great resources besides granite. There’s recycled granite and
there’s also concrete that looks like granite. There are a lot of
people out there who are making eco-friendly products we
can use.
