Valentine R. Martin (Val)

With great sadness we share the news of the passing of our friend Val Martin, who through his publishing house and bookstores helped save and promote a big part of early Florida history. Val, the founder of Florida Classics Library in Hobe Sound, died Wednesday, reported his niece, Julie Alexander, who now runs the library and bookstore. Val obtained the publishing rights to some of the books and published others that were in the general domain. His top sellers were Marjorie Stoneman Douglas’ “Everglades River of Grass,” Theodore Pratt’s “Barefoot Mailman,” “Jonathan Dickinson’s Journal,” Ada Coats Williams’ “Florida’s Ashley Gang” and
Eugene Lyon’s “The search for the Atocha.”
