“You can’t change the direction of the wind, but you can adjust the sails,” is an adage that’s valuable on sea and land. Since 2009, instructors at the Youth Sailing Foundation have taught children throughout Indian River County to handle challenges of the wind and water and, by extension, to continuously adapt their mindset to navigate life’s unexpected episodes.

For years, the foundation has operated out of temporary trailers behind the water treatment plant at the foot of the Alma Lee Loy Bridge. Now with a new name — YSF Community Sailing — that reflects its expanded mission to teach sailors of all ages, the foundation is set to break ground on the new YSF Community Sailing Center. The two-story, 10,000-square-foot building, at the southwest corner of the bridge, will have an expansive, unobstructed view of the Indian River Lagoon.
