Reel Tradition: Fish and Grits

Generations have enjoyed this practical, satisfying combination

Fish and grits is the quintessential meal of pioneer families along the Indian River Lagoon. This simple combination has sustained generations and has never lost its appeal. It is practical, economical and satisfying.

When my ancestors first settled on the river, they experienced a waterway dense with marine life. Old-timers like to say you could once walk across the river on mullet, and fish would often jump right into their boats. My generation has seen a significant decline in water quality and fish populations, but restoration efforts have given us hope.

The Indian River Lagoon continues to be the lifeblood of many local families. Fishing is a way of life here, whether from commercial work, weekend trips or just casting from the dock at sunset. What we catch is what is for dinner, and when we celebrate, we fry fish.
