Early physicians were tireless advocates for public good

When Dr. John T. Henderson, a successful physician from Cleveland, Ohio, came to this region during the real estate boom, it was to oversee his property interests — not continue practicing medicine. But with the creation of the county, the newly appointed commission became critically aware something needed to be done about the spread of disease and the fouling of the St. Lucie River. They turned to Henderson, appointing him as the county’s first health officer.
