Florida Eye Institute’s exclusive laser assisted cataract surgery — clearly the best choice

Traditional surgery to correct the potentially dangerous — and highly annoying — cloudy vision caused by cataracts is among the most effective, and the most commonly performed surgeries in the nation, but there was still significant room for improvement. It was an easy decision for the physicians at Florida Eye Institute to make that improvement by utilizing the latest state of the art laser-assisted cataract surgery techniques that goes a step further to ensure optimum results. The practice, which has offices in Vero Beach, Sebastian and Fort Pierce, is the only practice in the county to offer this option.

“Traditional cataract surgery is safe, but laser-assisted cataract surgery is much more precise, which leads to faster healing, reduced pain and improved vision,” said board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Shawn Swindler of Florida Eye Institute.

During traditional cataract surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision in the cornea using a scalpel and inserts a tiny probe that, using ultrasound, breaks up the cloudy lens. After the broken-up pieces of the lens are suctioned out, the lens is then replaced with an artificial intraocular lens, or IOL. The incision is self-sealing and usually no stitches are required.

Laser-assisted cataract surgery, on the other hand, begins with a computer controlled camera/ultrasound device that is placed over the eye, maps its surface and gathers information about the lens. Results are delivered to a powerful computer that programs the laser with the exact location, size and depth needed for incisions. The surgeon then uses the laser to make the corneal incision and the energy from the laser to break up the cataract. Like traditional surgery, the old lens is suctioned out and a new IOL is inserted. Again, the incision is self-sealing.

“By utilizing the precision of laser assisted surgery, the patient is far more likely to get the best possible outcome,” said Dr. Eric Medina, board certified ophthalmologist, who, like Dr. Swindler, routinely performs laser-assisted cataract surgery at Florida Eye Institute.

The laser allows for extremely precise incisions in less time, improves accuracy and consistency, reduces the amount of ultrasound energy to soften the cataract before removal and, in many cases, provides more complete correction than traditional surgery, while effectively treating the complications from astigmatism. When paired with premium replacement lenses, the patient enjoys what is considered the gold standard in the treatment of cataracts.

For patients with the common condition of irregular cornea shape, or astigmatism, a premium toric lens corrects for sharper vision at a single distance. Also available are multifocal IOLs that both correct astigmatism and provide clear vision at multiple distances simultaneously.

Patients at Florida Eye Institute have a choice of traditional or laser-assisted cataract surgery. Both are well-tested and proven options, but if your goal is the best possible vision, laser-assisted cataract surgery is the way to go.
