• The Highwaymen: From the Street Corner to the Smithsonian – In the 1950s, when segregation and limited opportunities stood in their way, these self-taught artists painted Florida’s untouched beauty — windswept beaches, fiery red poinciana trees, glistening lagoons, swaying palms, and endless skies. Armed with house paint and inexpensive Upson board, they created scenes full of light, color, and movement, selling their works from the trunks of their cars along Florida highways.
