The tri-colored heron, an early morning hunter, wades through shallow water in search of small fish and prawns hiding in the plentiful aquatic vegetation. Much smaller than the great blue heron, they prefer to hunt alone. Known for their striking three colors — blue, yellow and red — they are commonly spotted along the canals of Florida. Although frequently seen, they are considered a threatened species.
