Pleasant way to
improve environment
T he Oxbow Eco-Center has been protecting the area’s environment since 2001. The
225-acre preserve on the North Fork of the St. Lucie River plays a significant role as
a division of the St. Lucie County Environmental Resources Department. It has been
practicing what it preaches from the start, with the center being constructed through green
technologies, recyclable materials, salvaged pine trees and solar panels.
People can explore its Exhibit Hall and Discovery Room to learn more about nature, animal
life, the St. Lucie River, the Indian River Lagoon and Atlantic Ocean. Trails, boardwalks
and even observation towers let visitors to the center enjoy nature without interfering with
its function. Oxbow has provided many environmental programs and camps for children
as well as activities for adults.
Now, thanks to a sizable grant from the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program
Page 16, the center is creating an initiative to teach folks about the environment and how
to save it in their own way. Collaborating with other agencies and organizations, Oxbow
will have fun training courses for people to learn about everything from reducing their
use of plastic materials to keeping the water clean and using safe methods for their own
yards. Many of the participants in these programs will become leaders themselves to
spread the word.
No doubt, algae blooms, discharges and runoff of contaminants have raised the concerns
of many local residents worried about maintaining the health of our waterways. The good
news is that these environmental dangers have only lifted the spirits of people determined
to find out just what they can do to help. And the Oxbow Eco-Center’s planned initiative is
there to guide them. You can’t change the world overnight, but you can do a lot within the
community, starting with learning and then leading.
