SUNRISE THEATRE
The Sunrise Theatre has set new safety guidelines and revamped its schedule to cope with the pandemic.
To say the past year has been tumultuous for Fort Pierce and the rest of the
country would be an understatement. Many of us have endured the loss of loved
ones, homes or businesses. But it hasn’t been all bad news, especially for the city
and its citizens.
Anthony Westbury takes a stroll downtown and reports on a surprisingly robust and
vibrant local economy. Despite the financial effects of COVID-19, new businesses have
opened their doors on Second Street, Avenue A and Orange Avenue, complementing
some old favorites. And King’s Landing has recently announced a letter of intent has
been signed with Tampa-based Mainsail Hotels for an upscale boutique/resort-style
hotel. Page 8
Consultants have been busy seeking input from residents concerning what they
would like to see in the master plan for Harbour Pointe Park, which fronts the Fort
Pierce Inlet and Taylor Creek. Writer Susan Burgess explains on Page 18 what they have
in mind for the area. She also updates the city’s plan to establish a seaplane business
along the river. Page 22
If you’re wondering if it’s safe to attend a performance at the Sunrise Theatre, turn to
Page 24 where Burgess outlines its new safety guidelines and its revamped schedule.
Writer Pattie Durham brings us up to date on Page 34 on what happened when a new
high school opened and friends, couples and teams from the Fort Pierce Central High
School Class of 1979 were split up.
As business downtown grows, so does Corey Paul’s backyard garden that is a tribute
to his Haitian heritage. His presence on social media is also growing as he offers gardening
tips to his followers, aptly named the Green Thumb Gang. Page 40
And as always, our writers profile three interesting personalities: a sign waver on
U.S. 1, an industrious woodcarver; and an advocate for the LGBTQ community, beginning
on page 46.
So take a few minutes out of your busy schedule, whether you are working from
home, teaching remotely or enjoying the wonderful amenities Fort Pierce has to offer,
and enjoy this issue, which is filled with good news and uplifting stories.
