up Irish dance. Rondeau credits Flatley for helping “to bring
Irish dancing to the forefront.”
“He’s a nice guy,” she says. “I knew him before he was
famous.”
Still, for all of Flatley’s popularity, Newman concedes that
male students now are few and far between. “Boys are sometimes

easier to teach, actually, than girls,” says Newman.
“They listen, and focus on the dance. They don’t talk as
much as girls.”
Both women have traveled to Ireland, Canada and other
countries for dance competitions, and one wall of the studio
holds a corner-to-corner shelf crowded with their trophies.
Rondeau also is a certified judge for Irish dance competitions.
“I’ve made friends from all over the globe, all through dancing,”
Rondeau says.
Newman’s older sister, Dawn, has an Irish dance studio
in Melbourne. “Her son is a fabulous dancer, and my son
doesn’t even dance,” Newman says.
