Good news is just
around the corner
I f you are tired of all the bad news that has been hitting the airwaves, of having to decide
whether to take out or eat in, or need a break from binge watching your favorite TV
show, there is good news. The city and its multitude of businesses and medical centers
are looking forward to welcoming back patrons and athletes to a new normal way of life.
Business leaders, medical professionals and city officials explain to writer Greg Gardner
their upcoming plans to deal with the state regulations for social distancing, wearing face
masks and visiting the hospitals and city recreation areas. Page 8
On Page 14, Susan Burgess updates the growing accolades and funding that have been
bestowed on the city. This time, Port St. Lucie is being honored for its work in keeping
residents informed during weather emergencies. And its daily news releases also have
updated information on the pandemic.
Burgess also brings us up to speed on the construction of the new Ardie R. Copas State
Veterans’ Nursing Home in Tradition. She also recounts the touching efforts of Shyrell
Copas, the daughter of the center’s namesake, to keep alive her father’s memory and how
he won the Medal of Honor. Page 17
If cleaning is your thing, you might find Burgess’ story on Page 22 about the city’s
Adopt-A-Street program and the people involved interesting.
When the city libraries reopen, techies should make a beeline to the Paula A. Lewis
Branch Library off Rosser Road and check out its 3-D printer, computers and scanners. If
technology isn’t your bag, the library also has an amazing selection of books for readers,
young and old, according to writer Rachel Cuccurullo. Page 28
Our People of Interest section, once again, features the stories of three individuals,
beginning on Page 40, and if you want to know what’s going on the region, check out
Things To Do on Page 46.
Oh, and by the way, if you are curious as to which movies, classic television or reality
shows people on the Treasure Coast have been watching during the quarantine, go to
www.indianrivermagazine.com/share-your-favorite-tv/ and check out the winners of a
survey we recently conducted.

Port St. Lucie’s beautiful recreation areas, especially those along the North Fork of the St. Lucie River, are opening
up again after being shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic.
