FORT PIERCE FOLKS
In Gold Street, Tyler Madison, the son of a senator, is in
grave danger when he tries to expose clandestine operations
of the U.S. Central Bank.
“But the real protagonist is Tyler’s mother, who knows he’s
entangled in some scary stuff and figures it out as the novel
goes along,” says Kale.
Kale’s third novel, Harm, returns to science. In it, Kale
challenges the Food and Drug Administration with the question:

“Why hasn’t the 40-yearold
war against cancer made
more progress?”
Kale accuses big pharmaceutical
companies of paying
the FDA to approve some
drugs and not others.
“The FDA isn’t concerned
with medicine and research. It
works for the pharmaceutical
companies,” she says.
“Harm” concerns Cory Montclair, a research scientist and
single mother whose baby recovers from cancer after taking a
drug banned in the U.S. After Cory writes about the benefits
of the drug in a medical journal, a pharmaceutical company
and the FDA are determined to destroy her.
Kale’s latest novel breaks new ground.
“It’s a first-person crime novel with a hard edge and some
sex,” she says with a grin.
Kale’s favorite mystery writer is British author, John le
Carré. Through a twist of fate, Kale helped him revise a novel
while living in Kenya.
“I met a woman researching Kenya for le Carré, who was

writing The Constant Gardener. But she hadn’t read his novels,
so I offered to help. Le Carré asked me to be an advance
reader, flying me to London and putting me up in a hotel. We
worked together eight hours a day,” she says.

Beach Book Center, at Barnes and Noble and anywhere
