SEASON OF THE ARTS

Picasso and Norma Jean, one of the contemporary works in the Pop Rocks
— Heroes, Icons and the Mundane exhibition, will be on display at A.E.
Backus Museum and Gallery in March.
Backus painting raffle March 2, and the season ends with
“Pop Rocks: Heroes, Icons and the Mundane,” March 12-
May 2.
Lucinda Gedeon, CEO of the Vero Beach Museum of Art,
notes that its upcoming season is a diverse one. “Exhibitions
explore Cuban modernism, historical American paintings
covering 200 years, wildlife photography and reflections on
life’s challenges by contemporary artist Dale Kennington.”
The season is also a busy one, with the exhibitions overlapping
in the halls of the museum, beginning with “Simply
Beautiful: Photographs from National Geographic” in the
Schumann Gallery and “Cuban Art & Identity: 1900-1950”
in the Holmes Gallery.
“Stephen Lawson: Images of Time” opens Jan. 27, “Dale
Kennington: Mythologies” is unveiled Feb. 2, followed by the
opening of “Picturing America: Signature Works” from the
Westmoreland Museum of American Art. All three exhibitions
run through spring, and then the summer is for the
young at heart, with “Walter Wick: Games, Gizmos and Toys”
in the Attic opening June 24.
The museum also has an extensive public programs schedule,
with lectures and presentations by internationally known
experts in the arts and humanities, a film studies program
and opera studies.
Music plays an important role in the arts at VBMA. The
longstanding partnership with the Atlantic Classical Orchestra
brings chamber music to the museum and there are
monthly jazz concerts in the Alice and Jim Beckwith Sculpture
Park. The ACO concerts begin in January, and then in
April, the museum will join with the Indian River Symphonic
Association for a special performance.
