The city of Port St. Lucie sprang up in 1961, seemingly out of nowhere. From jungle-like riverbanks, swarms of giant mosquitos and no residents, its population zoomed from zero to 240,000 in 63 years. Now, for the first time, there’s a place to learn more about where you live. The city’s soon-to-open history museum beckons with tales of intrigue, chronicles of colorful characters, amusing anecdotes, oral histories and changing exhibits.
The Port St. Lucie History Museum and Education Center, owned by the city and operated by the Port St. Lucie Historical Society, is expected to open on Westmoreland Boulevard in the fall, said Chairwoman Patricia Christensen, former Port St. Lucie mayor and long-time history lover who heads its board of directors.
