Dairy Queen ice cream store
This wonderful sight greeted passersby and motorists driving through Fort Pierce. The Dairy Queen ice cream store stood on the corner of Tenth Street and Orange Avenue for decades, and customers stopped in at all hours to enjoy the variety of treats and sandwiches that longtime Fort Pierce residents still remember.

Dairy Queen was downtown’s sweet spot for generations

BY JERRY SHAW

There’s hardly a person who lived in Fort Pierce between the 1950s and 1990s who doesn’t remember stopping off at the Dairy Queen — on the corner of Tenth Street and Orange Avenue — for a tasty ice cream treat.

Perhaps you were riding in the car as a kid, returning from the beach, and your parents treated you to a yummy cone. Maybe you were heading home after a sporting event and the familiar building convinced you it was time for a sweet delight. Or you just lived nearby and regularly strolled down the street for a banana split or even a chili cheese dog. How about the times you enjoyed Dairy Queen when the Sandy Shoes Festival parade passed by?
