A green jewel in the crown of the Treasure Coast, Heathcote Botanical Gardens is currently celebrating the 40th anniversary of connecting visitors with some of Mother Nature’s most delightful creations.
In Heathcote’s collection of Garden Rooms reside displays of stunning flora and fauna, such as the 128 unparalleled specimens in the Bonsai Gallery.
“We have the largest public display of bonsai in the United States,” said CEO Vicki Hoyos.
A significant part of the collection, including trees more than 220 years old, was bequeathed to Heathcote by internationally recognized bonsai master James Smith, who pioneered the use of Florida native species to interpret the ancient art of bonsai. Smith imagined a setting where guests could meander through a forest of magical, tiny trees, unique varieties awaiting at every turn. Smith’s vision became reality at Heathcote.
Heathcote’s bonsais are so famous that several specimens take pride of place at EPCOT during the theme park’s annual International Flower & Garden Festival.
“They are truly priceless,” Hoyos said.
The Bonsai Gallery is only a small part of the Heathcote story. What started as a mom-and-pop nursery has evolved — thanks to unwavering community support — into a destination botanical garden that educates young and old and inspires with abundant botanical beauty.
For its 40th birthday bash, Heathcote will celebrate with a “Top Gun” themed party in May, a fitting thread, for the Tom Cruise blockbuster premiered in May of 1986, just as the gardens were launching. Additional events are planned, including special programming for children, the popular “Tea in the Gardens” series, Fall Garden Festival, the “Garden of Lights” holiday display and more.
“We want to be a garden for all,” Hoyos said.
