This great blue heron takes a rest along the west shore of the Indian River near Fort Pierce City Marina. In 2015, the marina completed a unique storm protection project comprising 13 islands of various sizes that were built around the docks at the city marina. Aimed at protection of the many boats docked there, the islands were designed to serve a dual purpose by providing a juvenile fish habitat. Mangroves were planted to help provide sanctuary for the small fish. Birds and other marine life also are drawn to these islands.
