Of all the editions of
Fort Pierce Magazine
we’ve published over
eight years, this one
certainly ranks near the top
in reporting the tremendous
progress that is taking place
in the city.
You only have to drive out
to South Beach Page 8, with
its broad boulevards, wide
sidewalks and bike paths to
see the transformation that has
taken place. The improvements
have created a beautiful
gateway to the Atlantic and
laid the groundwork for better
things to come on South Beach.
Our story on the Main Street
program Page 14 catalogues
the many improvements it has
helped make to downtown over
the past quarter-century. And
speaking of downtown, we are
happy to report on the addition
of a micro-brewery Page 42 on Second Street.
This issue also pays homage to three longtime families. We report on the
Summerlins Page 34, who are celebrating 125 years here. They gained their
reputation in the fishing industry. The Gruwells Page 29 haven’t been here as long,
but they have set things abuzz in the bee-keeping business. We also chronicle the
Haisleys Page 52, who have expanded their family funeral home business despite
a trend toward corporate consolidation in the industry.
Several of our stories show the tremendous well of community support in Fort
Pierce. It seems the entire community came together to rebuild the playground at
Rotary Park Page 26 near the intersection of Virginia Avenue and 25th Street. Find
out about efforts to ensure that the century-old west wing of the yellow brick school
on Delaware Avenue Page 20 is renovated and continues to be used as a school.
Also read the inspiring story Page 38 of how 12A Buoy came back from the ashes
after a fire last year, and how the community rallied to help employees who were
temporarily out of work.
The people of Fort Pierce make the city what it is, and we are happy to present
three people Page 46 who help make it a better place to live.
