and cheese as an appetizer and the yellowtail snapper as an
entrée. The snapper is a butterflied whole fish with the tail
on. It is pan seared in a basil oil with spinach, capers, garlic,
fresh tomatoes, Kalamata olives and red pepper and finished
with a citrus glaze.
A unique appetizer that some patrons order as an entrée
is the tuna tartar. This is a stacked dish with fresh slices of
avocado, tuna, seaweed salad, ginger, crab-infused cream
cheese and salmon roe served with wasabi, thickened ponzu
sauce and toast points. Another favorite is the Miami Vice
soup, a mixture of the restaurant’s New England and
conch chowders.
The key lime pie is a favorite dessert item. Hartley created
the recipe in 1990 and tweaked it to make it even better. “It’s
different than a regular key lime pie,” he said. “It’s not custard
based or baked. We make our own crust that is thicker
and sweeter than most crusts.” Butter and cinnamon make
the crust oh so delicious.
Community support for 12A was demonstrated for more
than two months after an early morning fire last September.
The fire damaged the kitchen, but the entire restaurant needed
an overhaul because of the smoke. During the time that 12A
Buoy was closed, Fort Pierce residents rallied with support by
having an SOS Save our Staff fund-raiser for the employees
who were out of work. Staff members returned to their jobs and
the newly refurbished restaurant when it reopened on Nov. 21.
The popularity of 12A Buoy extends beyond Fort Pierce.
Hartley was in Costa Rica and was wearing his 12A Buoy tee
shirt when lo and behold, someone said “Oh my gosh! I’ve
been there. I love that place.” Trabulsy describes a similar
experience in the Orlando airport.
For the future, Trabulsy says, 12A plans to keep the consistency
going. “We have such a supportive community,” he
said. “I love it!”

12A Buoy is adjacent to the Black Pearl boat ramp. The unlucky fisherman
whose catch got away can cozy up to a table at 12A Buoy to enjoy
fresh seafood.
