In 2011, Main Street Fort Pierce was named the Great American Main Street by the National Trust for Historic
Preservation. Left to right: Beth Williams, Doris Tillman, Mimi Ewan, Pam Gillette and Donna and Bob Benton.
Main Street award from the
National Trust for Historic
Preservation, the private organization
that was chartered
by Congress in 1949 and sets
the standards and guidelines
for all Main Street organizations
in the country. In 2010,
Main Street Fort Pierce was a
runner-up for the award.
Tillman’s bubbling confidence
and enthusiasm, on tap
since she started in 1992, show
no signs of flagging. She and
the Main Street board, their
staff, volunteers and business
partners, helped downtown
push through the hard times.
Hudson said there was a
time when she was rather
discouraged about the future
of the historic downtown, but,
“I’ve been so encouraged by
the Sunrise Theatre and the
marina,” she said. “I believe
the downtown is going to have
a resurgence.”
From the beginning, Main
Street thrived by building
partnerships with businesses.
