Two lonely residents at a seedy nursing home strike up a tenuous friendship by playing gin rummy. While playing their games, they engage in lengthy conversations about their families and their lives. Gradually, conversations become battles, much like the ongoing gin games, as each player tries to expose the other’s weaknesses,
The Gin Game has been performed numerous times on and off Broadway, winning the Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award in 1978. The two characters have been played through the years by the likes of Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, Maureen Stapleton and EG Marshall, Julie Harris and Charles Durning, Mary Tyler Moore and Dick Van Dyke, and most recently, by Cicely Tyson and James Earl Jones.
