When word got out that fateful evening that Hair had
been shot, hundreds of people gathered at Fort Pierce
Memorial Hospital on North Seventh Street.
His widow, Doretha Hair Truesdell, remembers that
she grabbed her keys and ran out the door heading to the
hospital when she got the phone call that her husband
had been shot.
“I turned off Dunbar onto 29th Street speeding, and
then I knew,” she recalls. “I slowed down, there was no
