CELEBRATING
100 YEARS
KOBLEGARD FAMILY
Double matinees were very popular as children and adults line up before
the doors opened in 1952.
Wendy Koblegard Bishop, Rupert N.’s granddaughter, recalled
Saturday matinees in the 1950s with friends and cousins.
“Everybody in town came,” she said. “We saw Roy Rogers, Gene
Autrey, the Lone Ranger. I always got a small popcorn, Junior Mints
and Jujubes.”
The theater was mobbed with young people when teen heartthrob
Bobby Rydell appeared in the early 1960s, Bishop said, recalling
the excitement when the handsome young singer came to Fort
Pierce. She also sat through Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 1958 twice without
ever leaving the theater. For one of the rereleases of Gone with
the Wind, everyone brought sandwiches to eat during an unheard-of
intermission because the film was just shy of four hours.
