Port St. Lucie

Never a dull moment in
‘City of all Ages’
This is a thrilling time of year for Port St. Lucie, and we hope you’ll find this issue of
Port St. Lucie Magazine equally exciting.
Nothing says spring like the arrival of the New York Mets in Port St. Lucie. And
baseball fans aren’t the only people with reason to celebrate. As you’ll find out in “Solid
Hit’’ beginning on Page 22, the Mets generate an estimated $30 million to $39 million for
the local economy. Says County Administrator Howard Tipton: “Their time at Tradition
Field has been a catalyst for development in St. Lucie West and helped keep a light shined
not only on Port St. Lucie as Florida’s ninth largest city, but also the Treasure Coast.’’
And speaking of importance to the Treasure Coast, did you know that the Pruitt
Campus at Indian River State College is the second largest of IRSC’s five campuses? In
“Close to Home’’ beginning on Page 8, we also look at what the addition of the William
and Helen Thomas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Center has done to
enhance the campus.
In “Banking for the Future’’ beginning on Page 14, you’ll learn about future plans
for the 9.7-acre park on the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. The plans could include
extending the boardwalk at the Riverwalk and adding historically important buildings,
a restaurant, a replica of an old fishing camp, possibly a Native American village, and
exhibition space for artisans.
Find out about the many different kinds of wildlife Port St. Lucie animal control deal
with every day in “Look but Don’t Touch’’ beginning on Page 26.
You’ll get an up close and personal look at city politics in “PSL Government 101’’
beginning on Page 30. And you can find out about the many volunteering opportunities
available in the city in “Unselfish Commitment’’ beginning on Page 34.
Meet four interesting Port St. Lucie residents, including a Port St. Lucie pioneer, a high
school teacher, an artist and a woodworker, in our Port St. Lucie People feature beginning
on Page 38.
These are just some of the offerings that we hope you’ll enjoy in this edition.
And don’t forget, we have expanded our publishing schedule to four times a year:
January, March, June and September.
See you in June!
