NANCY FLEMING CARTEE
Age: 66
Hometown: Port St. Lucie
Education: John Carroll High
School, 1966; Bryant College,
Rhode Island, 1970; master’s
degree from Central Connecticut
State College, 1972
Family: Husband, John, retired
educator and coach; a son, Matthew Fleming of Tampa; two
daughters, Jennifer Fleming Moore of Port St. Lucie and Erin
Honey of New Jersey; and two granddaughters, Grace of
Tampa and Lorelei of New Jersey.
Professional Background: Spent 33 years teaching middle
school, then high school business and office skills classes.
Something Most People Don’t Know About Me: “I let out
my creative juices with the sewing machine, making Halloween
costumes for my grandchildren and the grandchildren
of friends. Last year, I made three Elsa dresses (Disney’s
Frozen). I love making little girls’ dresses and costumes.”
Providence, R.I., where she was born and still had relatives
there. After graduating in 1971 with a degree in business education,
she went on to Central Connecticut State College and
where she received a master’s degree in business education.
During her school years in the Northeast, she met a young
man, Tom Fleming, and they married. She became a military
wife, and said she “was busy for the next few years traveling
around the country as a military wife and raising two small
children.”
Her first venture into teaching was at Punta Gorda Junior
High School. In 1982, the young family moved back to where
her heart and family was, Port St. Lucie. While her husband
found work in Port St. Lucie, she began teaching business/
career classes at Dan McCarty Middle School in Fort Pierce.
Then her husband became seriously ill and died in 1984. A
widow with two young children, Cartee stayed near her family
and continued to teach.
In 1989, the first public high school in Port St. Lucie was
built to accommodate the city’s burgeoning young populace.
Cartee was one of the teachers on board when the school
opened, and she continued working with students in business
“When I began teaching, it was on typewriters,” Cartee
said. “Then, it moved to computers. But the part I enjoyed the
most was the last few years, when I was teaching coding and
web design. I really liked that.”
She met the high school football coach, John Cartee, during
her years at PSL High School, marrying him in 1992. Although
Port St. Lucie Magazine 39
classes for the next 24 years.
FORT
PIERCE
retired, her strong connection to Port St. Lucie High
School drew her back to help with the school’s 25th anniversary
celebration in 2014.
Now that both are retired, the Cartees continue to live in
Port St. Lucie. She spends a lot of time sewing costumes and
dresses for her granddaughter and other little girls whose
parents or grandparents know her. This allows her to utilize
those creative and artistic genes she inherited from her father.
Although her parents are both deceased, her daughter still
lives in the area, as do Cartee’s two younger sisters and some
of their family members.
Little did she know, back in 1959, that she would be an
early settler of the small sleepy town that has blossomed into
Port St. Lucie. E
