ning of the school year. The 2007-08 winner will be
announced early in February and will be featured in the
orchestra’s final concert of the season. Last year’s winner
was Nicholas Galfond, a marimba player from Palm City.
Stephen and Kate Torick retired from teaching in New
Jersey before settling on the Treasure Coast. He was
director of music and taught for 35 years in the Sparta,
N.J., school system. With music degrees from Manhattan
School of Music and studies under world-class conductors,
Torick took his experience to the U.S. Air Force, stationed
in Montgomery, Ala. While there, he was principal
trumpeter in the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra.
Kate Torick earned her degrees in music from Ithaca
College and Montclair State College. She was principal
horn in several orchestras, including the Hanover Wind
Symphony and the Cornell Savoyards Opera Orchestra.
The couple lives in Port St. Lucie and, in addition to TCS,
conduct the Port St. Lucie Community Concert Band.
The orchestra will perform two concerts this season.
ON Dec. 16, the annual Holiday Extravaganza will feature
“Twas the Night Before Christmas,’’ with narration
by Bill Holcombe; “A Canadian Brass Christmas’’; Bill
Holcombe’s “Festive Sounds of Hanukkah’’; and Leroy
Anderson’s famous arrangement of “Christmas Festival”
