A TREASURE TO READ
Your award-winning magazine
With the onset of Hurricane Irma and the death of our good friend Bud Adams
while putting out our last issue, we held oͿ on announcing the wonderful news
that we had recently received from the Florida Magazine Association.
During the association’s annual Charlie Awards presentation held in August, Indian River
Magazine won the best overall writing award among similar consumer magazines in the
state as well as three other editorial awards.
“The stories in this publication were compelling and provided a deep appreciation for
the area and the people,” the FMA judges wrote in bestowing the award. “The stories were
very well researched and presented in the most interesting ways ³ reflecting ecellence in
storytelling and writing.”
Writers Rick Crary, Donna Crary and Alison O’Leary won a silver best writing award for
stories appearing in the magazine’s Living History department. Cited in the award were
Rick Crary’s Epic Tale of Survival, a story on Jonathan Dickinson shipwreck survivor Robert
Barrow; Donna Crary’s story on cracker cowgirl Iris Wall and Alison O’Leary’s Hunting
Grounds story on *erman 8boats patrolling oͿ the Treasure &oast during
World War II.
Associate Editor Judith Collins also won a silver award for best feature
headline writing while Design Editor Michelle Moore-Burney won
a bronze award in the under 20,000-circulation category for best feature
design.
The overall writing award is a tribute to our outstanding writing and
editing staͿ listed on the left side of this page. We often boast that our
magazine features the best writers on the Treasure Coast and now we
can boast that our magazine also features the best writers in Florida.
We are also happy to announce that our Back Country feature will
continue and will feature the photography of Robert Adams, son of
rancher Bud Adams. The photography of Bud, who died Sept. 22 at the
age of 91, had appeared in the department since our Àrst issue was published
11 years ago.
